This is one of Apple's responses to Microsoft's Windows 7 launch today. What do you think of it? Is it an effective and strategic ad?

I think it's an effective ad - Windows operating systems have been notoriously unstable at the first (and often subsequent) stages of their release. Certainly, Vista was accepted overall as a disaster. I'm getting weary of the format of Apple's ads, though - and I'm an Apple Head!

They're vicious but effective. I give them a thumbs-up on this.

The truth hurts, and the truth is that MSFT HAS made such promises before...and we've all lived with the realities for years. BUT, if all the software reviewers are correct, W7 is the real deal and HAS made significant improvements on past operating systems (no less an influencer than Walter Mossberg of WSJ has said that W7 pretty much rates a draw vs. Mac's latest OS, Snow Leopard). This probably means that the word will eventually get out and PC users will likely not defect to Macs any more than their current rate (which is bad enough!).

Net: this commercial will have a short shelf life, but as a quick potshot that may help delay early adoption at the mass level, it continues to paint Apple and MSFT as companies cut from different bolts of cloth*.

And, I loved the execution itself!

* Interesting observation - Did anyone else notice that as PC changed clothes and personal grooming styles, Mac stayed pretty constant (different color t-shirt and pants...that's about it). I like the message that they are sending with that contrast.
